Feburary 28, 2010: Roger Nygard Talks "Trekkies"
Living The Narrative Together

Back in 1999, Roger Nygard documented the cultural pheneomenon of Trek fandom with "Trekkies," a documentary that was, all at once, humorous, insightful, and affectionate. Roger then decided that there was more of the story to tell and hit us with "Trekkies 2," which took a trip around the world in search of kindred Trek souls.
Roger joins us on February 28 to screen portions of both documentaries and then to dig into the whys and the wherefores of our collective devotion to the Trek narrative. Some would say it's a secular religion; others would say it's just a cultural fad. Roger will also share with us some thoughts on his latest film, "The Nature Of Existence."
Also joining us on February 28 will be Professor Daryl Frazetti, who will chime in with his observations on fandom from an anthropological perspective. Daryl, a lifelong Trek devotee, shows up in both "Trekkies" documentaries with his rather unique take on how Trek fans should clothe their cats.

What Is "Human" Life?

One of the most fascinating aspects of Star Trek comes in the exploration of what it means to be human. But, sometimes that which seems to be human is not. Marina Sirtis, the beautiful and gifted actress who portrayed Counselor Deanna Troi, joins us for a discussion of "The Child," a compelling and thought-provoking episode from The Next Generation. Deanna finds herself impregnated by an alien life form that is pure energy . . . and facing one of the most emotionally draining challenges of her Star Fleet career!
All sessions start at 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Encino.
